Updates about federal funding and UW Alzheimer’s disease research

Update July 9: The university’s federal relations team posted a summary about the Congressional reconciliation package, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which the President signed into law on July 4. The most significant impacts to UW–Madison include the provision to defund SNAP-Ed, which supports the Division of Extension’s outreach programming about nutritional education, and changes to federal student financial aid, including the elimination of Grad PLUS loans and limits/caps on Parent PLUS loans. Grad PLUS Loans will be eliminated effective July 1, 2026, but current borrowers can complete their program with “grandfathered” Grad PLUS Loans.

Update April 16:  The Wisconsin Alumni Association hosted a UW Now livestream event about how proposed changes in federal research funding affect major universities like UW–Madison, with a focus on National Institutes of Health-funded research such as work on Alzheimer’s disease. Speakers included Anjon Audhya, PhD, senior associate dean for basic research at UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and Sterling Johnson, PhD, professor of medicine. Watch a recording of the event on the WAA YouTube page.

Update March 26: Sterling Johnson, PhD, provided testimony on the importance and urgency of National Institutes for Health (NIH) investments in research at a forum on Capitol Hill hosted by U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Peter Welch (D-VT).
